The illustrations are drawn by Billy Dobbie, a friend of Thomas and a professional illustrator from Newton Mearns. Each adventure ends with the fishmates singing a verse from their Bobalong seasong, the music for which was composed by local music teacher Margaret Shepherd. The books are mildly educational, and Thomas hopes they will appeal to children and parents alike.'
