Wonder on the Forth, The

Author/Editor: Donald Lightwood

Morag and Alec live under the shadow of the newly constructed Forth Rail Bridge, already being called ‘the eighth wonder of the world’.

The bridge means poverty and death to the two children. They watch, helpless, as a man falls to his death during its building. Their father works as a navvy on the bridge - will he be the next to die? With no mother to turn to, Morag and Alec suffer their father’s drunkenness and being bullied at school. They run away, only to be put in the Poorhouse. Destitute, with nothing to call their own, how will they ever escape the cruelty and prejudice that seems to be their fate?
