Author Information - Michael T R B Turnbull
Michael T R B Turnbull was born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1941, the son of a Scottish father and a Brazilian mother. He spent the War in Scandinavia and came to Britain at the age of seven, after living in Brazil for two years.
Educated at Galashiels, North Berwick and Fort Augustus, he took degrees at the universities of Cambridge and London before studying drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art. After spells of primary teaching in France and Scotland he was appointed a lecturer in further education in 1975. In 1993, he was made a Churchill Fellow. Recently, he graduated Ph.D Ecclesiastical History from Edinburgh University.
Michael has twice been awarded a Scottish Arts Council Writers bursary (1993, 1997) and a Glenfiddich Living Scotland Award (1986, 1991), as well as a Sir Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship (1993).
He has had 17 books published, mainly on Scottish history, including Edinburgh Portraits (John Donald, 1987); Buildings and Landmarks of Edinburgh (W & R Chambers, 1989); Monuments and Statues of Edinburgh (W & R Chambers, 1989); The Edinburgh Book of Quotations (B&W Publishing, 1991); The Edinburgh Graveyard Guide (first published by Saint Andrew Press, 1991, revised and updated by Scottish Cultural Press, 2006); Joseph Hislop: gran tenore (Scolar Press, 1992); Scotland: The Facts (W & R Chambers, 1993); Cardinal Gordon Joseph Gray (Saint Andrew Press, 1994); Edinburgh and Lothians' Holy Corners (Saint Andrew Press, 1996); Mary Garden (Scolar Press, 1997); Edinburgh à la Carte (Scottish Cultural Press, 1997); Saint Andrew (Saint Andrew Press, 1997); Scotland the Facts (Neil Wilson, 1998); Curious Edinburgh (Sutton Publishing, 2005). The revised edition of his book, Saint Andrew: Scotland's Myth and Identity, is to be published by Scottish Cultural Press, 2008 (ISBN 1 84017 004 2).
