author image of Liz Ashworth Liz Bowie (formerly Ashworth) is a well known Scottish Cookery Writer for newpapers and magazines such as the Aberdeen Evening Express, the Press and Journal, the Sunday Post, Northern Scot (BT Scotland and UK Weekly Newspaper of the Year), the Leopard Magazine and Highland Life and Executive.

She has been a guest cook at many festivals, including the Perth Food Festival, the Edinburgh Book Festival and the Keith Show Celebration of Food (with Nick Nairn and Marion MacFarlane) and appeared on Scottish TV’s “Square Meals” programme.

She now works in product development, a field where she has quickly gained the deep respect of her colleagues as well as winning many prestigious awards (Grampian Enterprise Education Business Partnership Outstanding Project Award, winner of the Healthier Product Gold Award, Highly Commended in Grampian Food Forum Awards, winner of two Highly Commended Awards in the Health Enhancing category for her oat products, winner of a Great Taste Gold Award for her Handmade Digestive Biscuits and winner of the Great Taste Silver Award for her Rye and Oat Sweetmeal Biscuits, to name but a few).

Now working in product development, firstly with John Smith and Sons New Pitsligo where she developed biscuits for Pam Rodway of Wester Lawrenceton Farm (which won BBC Small Organic Producer of 2000 Award); and an oat and ginger shortbread for Lady Cawdor (Cawdor Castle Shortbread). Moving on, she developed the award winning Conserve Relish for Buccleuch Heritage Foods followed by a Gold Award for a Strawberry and Gooseberry Jam. Orkney Herring won a Gold Great Taste Award for Liz’s Moroccan Spiced Herring and she is still enjoying the inventing side of good food and continuing to win awards for her clients, which include Gillies Fine Foods of Dingwall (Gold and Bronze for Barley Biscuits) and Simpsons of Rothes (Silver award for their Walkers Bar – a sumptuous cranberry and apricot flapjack bar).

For many years Liz has been part of the movement to help change the diet of our nation in general and young people in particular – you are what you eat! Writing many books and articles on the subject has now led her to work along with primary schools using her latest book – Crafty Croc’s Snappy Snacks – to promote and encourage children to cook and eat a healthier diet. A pilot scheme is now in operation which uses her book to provide a healthy tuck shop in all schools. Liz herself is at the cutting edge developing healthy snacks from wholesome ingredients – no fizz, colour or additives but full of flavour, affordable, consumer friendly and best of all good in every sense of the word.
